House Bill 371 – Chips
Sponsor: Representatives Pillich and Belcher
Committee: Civil and Commercial Law
Synopsis: This bill, the “Child in Need of Protective Services” (CHIPS) bill would rewrite the statutes relating to abused or neglected children, expanding children services interference in the family in a broad number of ways. Children could be taken for lack of “necessary health care” (as determined by one medical professional), “necessary education”, or “necessary oversight”. False reporting incidents would increase under this bill, and there are questions if these provisions do not violate existing Supreme Court decisions. The bill has had sponsor testimony.
