SCOTUS Rules Unanimously for Pro-Life Group – Victory for Free Speech
Please see the good news below from Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List), a national pro-life organization. The Supreme Court of The United States (SCOTUS) has unanimously ruled that SBA List does indeed have standing to challenge Ohio’s “false statement” law in federal district court. This is an important case for free speech in Ohio and our nation.
Please see the note from SBA List and the links to their press release and a Politico article on the subject.
Thank you for your continued support of life and liberty.
Friends of SBA List:
Just a quick note to share the great news! This morning the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in the case of Susan B. Anthony List v. Steven Driehaus. The 9-0 decision allows us to continue our First Amendment challenge to Ohio’s “false statement” law.
As you may remember, in 2010, we attempted to erect billboards to expose that former Rep. Steve Driehaus supported taxpayer funded abortion by voting for the Affordable Care Act. We were prevented from putting up the billboards because of the Ohio law, and we were threatened with prosecution if we engaged in similar speech.
Today’s decision by the court is a step toward victory for free speech and the broad coalition of groups who have supported us throughout this case. More than 20 groups filed amicus briefs on our behalf including the ACLU, Alliance Defending Freedom, Bioethics Defense Fund, the RNC, and the U.S. Solicitor General.
Our message is simple: Truth or falsity of political speech should be judged by voters, not government bureaucrats.Furthermore: It is beyond dispute that Obamacare contains multiple abortion-funding provisions. This fact will continue to be an issue in the midterm elections and future election cycles.
Now, we head back to Ohio to fight the law itself in district court. Thank you for your continued prayers and support. We hope the lower court will rule quickly and side with the First Amendment, so that we may proceed to expose the truth about Obamacare without fear of prosecution.
I’m including a link to our press release below as well as a great write up from Politico.
