Super Majority of Ohio Republicans and Churches Support
Natural Marriage as Defined: One Man and One Woman

Mark Twain once said, “Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.”  It seems distortion is the name of the game when it comes to articles on the issue of redefining marriage.  Citizens for Community Values has previously shared that over 90% of elected Republicans at the state and federal level support the definition of Natural Marriage as defined in the Ohio Constitution, as one man and one woman.

In addition, the vast majority of churches stand firm on the issue of Natural Marriage.  These churches represent the vast majority of believers across Ohio and very clearly state their beliefs in public statements (below).

CCV’s Charles Tassell stated, “There is a distinct agenda to fool Ohioans into believing that Natural Marriage needs to be redefined because the media is participating in creating this false reality.  The truth is, as we have repeatedly shared, there is no equal to Natural Marriage.”

Sample Public Statements of Churches across Ohio:
Some Denomination Positions on Marriage

Catholic Church “…only within marriage does sexual intercourse fully symbolize the Creator’s dual design, as an act of covenant love, with the potential of co-creating new human life… rooted in the biblical account of man and woman created in the image of God and made for union with one another…the Church teaches that homogenital behavior is objectively immoral…”  (

Seventh‑day Adventists “believe that sexual intimacy belongs only within the marital relationship of a man and a woman.” (

Southern Baptist Convention: “affirm God’s plan for marriage and sexual intimacy – one man, and one woman, for life.” (

Christian Reformed Church in North America: “Homosexuality is a condition of disordered sexuality that reflects the brokenness of our sinful world.” (

Assemblies of God: “The Assemblies of God believes strongly that God has declared great displeasure and opposition toward homosexual conduct.” (

Calvary Chapel Life believes “that marriage is exclusively the legal union of one genetic male and one genetic female sanctioned by the state and evidenced by a marriage ceremony.” (

Churches of Christ: “God remains consistent in His condemnation of homosexuality as He does for all other sins.  Homosexuality is indeed an unacceptable lifestyle before our Lord God Almighty.  By the written Word of the Most High God we cannot condone or embrace homosexuality within the church.” (

The Church of the Nazarene “believes that every man or woman should be treated with dignity, grace, and holy love, whatever their sexual orientation. However, we continue to firmly hold the position that the homosexual lifestyle is sinful and is contrary to the scriptures.” (

Orthodox Church: “The Orthodox Christian teaching on marriage and sexuality, firmly grounded in Holy Scripture, 2000 years of church tradition, and canon law, holds that marriage consists in the conjugal union of a man and a woman, and that authentic marriage is blessed by God as a sacrament of the Church.” (

Jehovah’s Witnesses “God intended marriage to be a permanent, intimate bond between a man and a woman.” (Awake! magazine for 2001-APR-08) (

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints “doctrinal position is clear: Sexual activity should only occur between a man and a woman who are married.” (

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod “affirms that such behavior is “intrinsically sinful” and that, “on the basis of Scripture, marriage [is] the lifelong union of one man and one woman.” (

The Church of God (Cleveland, TN) “affirms its position based upon the teachings of Holy Scripture that marriage is, and only can be, the union of one man and one woman in the bonds of holy matrimony as stated by Jesus Christ.”  (

The conviction of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church is that “1) homosexuality is a sin; and 2) God forgives repentant sinners.” (

“In 2004, the National Association of Evangelicals reaffirmed its 1985 resolution that homosexuality is not sanctioned by the Bible. Thus the group does not support gay marriage or civil unions.”  (

NOTE: This list does not include thousands of independent churches that also believe marriage should only be between one man and one woman.
